Storm Drains
The City of Mississauga’s storm drain by-law is designed to protect local waterways and prevent flooding by regulating what can and cannot enter the stormwater system. For residents, this means:
No dumping of pollutants: It is illegal to dispose of chemicals, oils, paints, yard waste, or any other pollutants into storm drains, as these drains carry water directly to creeks, rivers, and Lake Ontario without being treated.
Proper waste disposal: Residents should always use designated facilities for hazardous household waste, and ensure yard debris and pet waste are disposed of with regular garbage or green bin programs, not in the street or catch basins.
Construction and property maintenance: When doing landscaping or renovations, soil, sediments, concrete, and wash water must be contained and prevented from flowing into storm drains.
Vehicle maintenance: Washing vehicles on driveways should be minimized or done at a commercial car wash, as soaps and oils can flow into the storm system.
Reporting spills or illegal dumping: Residents are encouraged to report any spills or suspicious dumping into storm drains by contacting the City or using 3-1-1.
By following these requirements, residents help keep local water bodies clean, prevent blockages and flooding, and avoid fines or penalties. The by-law ensures that everyone plays a part in environmental protection and community safety.
